EYFS Curriculum
At Witton Gilbert Primary School, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage which breaks the curriculum into 7 Educational programmes which are broken down into 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas. Each area of learning is important and the areas overlap. Many of our activities include learning from at least two areas. The curriculum was updated in 2021 and focuses on the importance of ensuring children have a deep secure understanding of each concept or skill before moving their learning on.
- Personal , Social and Emotional Development
We support children in developing confidence and independence. We encourage them to begin to form positive relationships and respect each other. Children learn about managing their own feelings and behaviours. We support the development of attention and concentration skills.
- Communication and Language Development
We provide a language-rich environment, encouraging the children to speak and listen in a variety of situations. We provide extra support for those children who need to build confidence or develop their speaking skills. We provide opportunities for children to acquire new vocabulary and develop their language through conversations, role play, story telling and adult modelling.
- Physical Development
We give children opportunities to be active and to develop their co-ordination, control and movement for both their gross and fine motor skills. There is a focus on children’s all round health and development, including social and emotional well-being. We also teach children about the importance of good hygiene habits including oral hygiene, fresh air and healthy food choices.
- Literacy
At Witton Gilbert we are invested in developing a lifelong love of reading, children are given access to a wide range of books and stories to ignite their interest. They are encouraged to link sounds and letters, and early reading and writing is developed.
- Mathematics
Children are provided with opportunities to develop and deepen their understanding, recognition and relationships between numbers, quantities and patterns. Children are also given opportunities to develop their spatial reasoning skills. Children are taught not to be afraid to make mistakes and to develop a positive attitude towards maths and problem solving.
- Understanding the World
We support children’s understanding of the world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about places, people, the environment and the natural world.
- Expressive Art and Design
Children explore a wide range of media and materials. They will experience a wide range of songs, rhymes, movement activities and stories.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
At Witton Gilbert Primary School, we believe that inclusive education means providing all pupils with appropriate education and support alongside their peers. The Curriculum is all the planned activities that the school organises in order to promote learning, personal growth and development.
