Witton Gilbert Primary School

Year 4 2018-2019

Welcome to our Year 4 webpage!

We are becoming fantastic authors; amazing mathematicians; wonderful historians, geographers and creative scientists,  musicians, artists and designers.

Follow this page to see what we are doing this term.

In year 4, Mrs Curry is our teacher and we also work with Mrs Bailey on Thursdays. Miss Lockett and Mr Hunter also help us with our learning  within our class.  We each have roles and responsibilities  that help our class run smoothly. We have school council, SNAG group (School Nutrition Action Group) and eco-group representatives that work with others to help make our school , lunchtimes and environment better and raise awareness with issues that we feel are important. So we have any suggestions about how to improve our school, we can share our ideas with them.  We also  choose class pupils as star of the day and star of the week for working hard and treating each other respectfully and with care.

Every day we do English reading and writing, maths and basic skills where we learn about number, calculations, logic and problem solving, grammar, punctuation and spelling.  We all have reading books that we need to read at least three times per week at home and get a signature from our parents in our organiser.  This helps us become fluent readers.  Our class author is the wonderful Roald Dahl and we study him throughout the year.

In Autumn Term our topic is 'The Rampaging Romans', whilst in Spring it is 'The Marvellous Mayans' and in Summer it is 'Rivers'.  We also have weekly ICT, RE and Music lessons.  We have P.E. on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with Evann (from CNS). We  bring in our kits at the start of each week and keep them  here throughout the week.  Our P.E. kit is: our house team t-shirt, black or navy shorts and black plimsolls. This year we will learn about the skills and tactics to play hockey, netball, multi-skills, gymnastics, dance, cricket, athletics and football.

There will be lots of chances for our parents, carers and school community to visit us in school. We have a Class 4 Celebration Assembly on Thursday 31st January, to which Year 4 parents are invited.

Our Year 4 cake day is on Friday 30th November this year.

Check out our regular school newsletters or the website calendar for further information.

Our classroom is full of growth mindset; we have a 'can-do' attitude where we like to overcome challenges and push ourselves out of our comfort zone.

We know that year 4 will be really exciting and that we're going to have so many great things to share. Why not read our blog regularly to keep up-to-date with our news?

Our topic this half term, is 'The Rampaging Romans'.

During the term, we will be researching and using a range of sources to find out about what was life in Britain before the Romans invaded; how the Romans changed Britain and about the aspects of daily life at that time.

Check out our topic Medium Term Plan for further information.

News of our week

kcurry on: Latest news from our courageous class

This week we have been writing interesting facts about our own lives for our autobiographies. Lots of us thought we had completed excellent writing and we have also been concentrating on our joined handwriting.

In our Fun to Cook group, we have taken turns to cook and our first group has been cooking apple crumble, vegetable pasta and margharita pizza. Next week, we will be cooking Spanish omelette, which Jasmine thinks will be extremely tasty.

We have been Maths Archaeologists, carrying out investigations and it was fun, challenging and you get to learn lots of things.

We are particularly excited about learning Mamma  Mia, so watch out as the kids might be singing it in their sleep!
