Year 1 2017-2018

Welcome to Year 1 at Witton Gilbert Primary School. You will find all you need to know about our class, our routines, what we've been learning, photos of the exciting things we get up to and another other important information.

We are lucky to have many adults helping us in Year 1.

Teacher - Mrs Hodgson

Teaching Assistants - Mrs Bainbridge, Mrs Ford, Miss Lockett & Miss MacLeod.

Classroom helpers - Mrs Raper (Mrs Hodgson's mum!) and Mrs Dodd

If you ever need any information, help, advice or just need to tell us something, please come and see Mrs Hodgson or Mrs Bainbridge and we will do our best to help!

In Summer 1, our P.E. lesson are on a Wednesday mornings  and Friday afternoons. Please make sure P.E. bags come in on a Monday and stay in school all week.

Children should have their house colour t-shirt, shorts and black plimsoles. This half term P.E. will be outside on a Friday for football so children need leggings/joggers and trainers for these sessions in their P.E. bags.

Please ensure earrings are removed for P.E. lessons.

Reading books will be changed on a Monday or a Thursday from this week. If your child receives a book this Monday, it will usually be changed on a Monday and if they receive a book on Thursday it will usually be changed on Thursdays.

  • Please ensure that you hear your child read at least 3 times a week and sign their organiser, as this will support their learning.
  • Practising their phonics sounds (yellow book) on a regular basis will also support their work in school.

Homework in Year 1 is set on a Friday and due in the following Monday or Tuesday. If you have any problems with completing the homework with your child, please catch us on Monday or send in a note and we will try to sort it out. If children do not complete it by Tuesday, they will have the opportunity to complete it at break time or lunchtime with either Mrs Hodgson or Mrs Bainbridge.

Current Newsletter

We've had a brilliant start to the first half of the summer term. The children are all ready and eager to learn and are excited about all the topics we are covering over the next 6 weeks.

Please can we remind parents to label each item of clothing as jumpers like to get very muddled up in Year 1, especially on P.E. days!

As the weather is starting to get nicer, please can you ensure your child brings a water bottle into school for the warmer days! Please ensure that your child has sunscreen on (or brings some to school to apply) and brings a sun hat on the sunnier days.

Music in Year 1

We have been having music lessons with a music teacher. Here is one of the songs we have learnt.

Amazing Year 1!

Village Walk

vhodgson on: Amazing Year 1!

Today Year 1 went for a long walk around Witton Gilbert. We were trying to spot different kinds of house, homes and buildings. We saw detached houses, semi-detached houses, rows of terraced houses, bungalows, apartments, caravans, B&Bs, shops, pubs, restaurants, hairdressers, farms and churches. We walked up to the cenotaph to see all the poppy wreathes for Remembrance Day. We spotted the wreath that the school laid there too.

Some of our legs were a little bit tired and our fingers were a bit chilly but Anna's birthday cake warmed us up when we got back to school!

Happy Birthday Anna!!!

Autumn Days

vhodgson on: Amazing Year 1!

We've been looking for signs of autumn. We found leaves, twigs, trees with no leaves, trees with colourful leaves and even some apples!

We've also found out that hedgehogs hibernate in autumn in piles of leaves.

Autumn Days

Today, year 1 have been exploring the school grounds to find signs of Autumn. We used plain paper and crayons to create some bark rubbings and we used the iPads to take photos outside. We then used the photos to make iBooks on the iPads.
