Witton Gilbert Primary School

As the weather is getting warmer, please remember to send your child to school with a hat and a water bottle. These can be refilled at school.

Light waterproof jackets are also useful as it's common for it to rain dot on 3.15!

Welcome to Year One! We are amazing!

Things we do in Year 1!

Multi-skills at Brandon Primary

Year1pupil on: Things we do in Year 1!

Year 1 headed to Brandon Primary School on the bus this morning. Although it was very wet, we all put on our waterproofs and enjoyed lots of different activities. The children who were outside played football, completed an obstacle course and enjoyed getting wet and muddy on the assault course. The children who were indoors learnt a dance, relaxed in the yoga room and learnt different exercises to keep fit. We all enjoyed different parts of the day and didn't complain once about how wet we were!

Summer Scavenger Hunt!

Year1pupil on: Things we do in Year 1!

This afternoon Year 1 decided to take part in a summer scavenger hunt! We went looking outside for signs of summer. We were lucky enough to find seeds, brightly coloured leaves, flowers, different coloured twigs, shadows made my the sun, tall purple Foxgloves, wind blowing through the tress, birds and aeroplanes swooping through the sky and berries on bushes. We think summer is finally here!

Check out our photos on our class web page!

Nature walk

Year1pupil on: Things we do in Year 1!

Today in Year 1, we have been exploring outside the school to find objects to use in our art work. We have been looking at Andy Goldsworthy and have been studying how he uses the natural environment to create pieces of art. We are trying to recreate our own pieces of work in his style. We will post some pictures later!

Year1pupil on: Things we do in Year 1!

This week we have been working really hard on our sentence writing skills. We have each started a NEWS book which we are going to write in every Monday. We are going to share what has happened to us over the weekend. Please can you talk about what we do at home to help us with our writing!

We have also been practising our phonics and reading alien words! We are super readers and help each other if we get stuck.

Our homework over the half term is keep practising our reading and our phonics (also to have some fun!). We will be getting extra reading books for the holiday.

Year 1

Teacher - Mrs Hodgson

Teaching Assistant - Mrs Bainbridge

Classroom support - Mrs Raper

We have had an exciting term so far in Year 1. We have been learning about life in the past and thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Beamish.

We are learning about Spring in science and are hoping to plant some seeds to observe how they grow.

In Year 1, we have a craft area where the children can create small models which they can take home. Please could children bring in small cardboard boxes, yoghurt pots etc to top the resources up.

Please can you ensure that your child has their full named P.E. kit (shorts, house colour t-shirt, plimsolls and trainers for outside) in all week. This half term P.E. will be on a Monday and Wednesday. Since it is the summer term, P.E. may be outside. Please ensure that your child has a suitable pair of outdoor shoes as well as plimsolls for indoor lessons.

We are going to be running the daily mile (in nice weather), so a pair of trainers can be brought into school.

Reading in Year 1

Levelled reading books will be changed on either a Wednesday or a Thursday. Sometimes children will receive 2 books. Please read with your child at least 3 times a week and record this in your child's organiser.

We will be sending some extra reading books home with the children for the half term holiday.

When reading with your child, it will help them if you discuss what is happening during the story and ask them questions.
