The children who represent our school in this group work alongside Mrs Howe to ensure no pupil in our school feels isolated or unfairly treated. We know how to deal with unkind actions and offer support to others. We have helped to make Witton Gilbert Primary School a safe place for all. We represent our school by working in partnership with other schools where we learn how to stay safe and work together. Our job is a very important one.
In line with our Anti-bullying policy at Witton Gilbert Primary School, we encourage participation from members of our school community – children, parents/carers, governors and all school staff on preventing and responding to bullying.
In our school, we have a team of dedicated Anti-bullying Champions from Years 4, 5 and 6 who meet regularly to discuss ways in which to raise awareness of the causes and effects of bullying to others.
The role of an Anti-bullying Champion is voluntary, often the children work in their own time during lunch breaks doing research or at home designing posters or writing stories, helping to promote the message that whether it is verbal, physical, online or face to face – bullying is completely unacceptable and we need to work together to create a safe environment for everyone. The Champions have also visited other schools in our area and taken part in interactive activities on various forms of bullying as well as being involved in workshops delivered by Durham County Council Equalities Education Team and the local police force.
The Champions have identified the following: What bullying is? Why people bully? Who can help if someone is being bullied? From this information they have planned and delivered assemblies/workshops, designed posters/leaflets, created films, promoted games/circle time and supported PSHCE lessons. A key focus for this year has been Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing. The Champions have discussed the causes of poor mental health in children and solutions to help. Every child in school knows who the Anti-bullying Champions are and feel supported by them as they can offer useful advice, ask questions and most importantly they are good listeners who know where to get help for those who need it.
Thank you to our Anti-Bullying Champions for all your hard work this year.
